[Cancer and Society] The Hero

Lee Hayden (Sam Elliott) is a fading star of old western films, with a life that doesn't seem so far off from the classic image of a cowboy. He's a bit of a loner, with personal relationships that are rooted more in necessity than anything else, and he moves through life with both skepticism and stoicism, remaining quiet and steady. As The Hero begins, Lee receives two pieces of news: that a film guild is giving him a lifetime achievement award, and that he has cancer.
