[Editorial] Exercise and cancer treatment: balancing patient needs

On May 7, 2018, the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia launched a position statement recommending that exercise should be prescribed to all patients with cancer as part of their treatment regimen. The statement—which has been endorsed by 25 leading health and care organisations, including the Cancer Council Australia, the Medical Oncology Group of Australia, and the Australian Physiotherapy Association, and echoes similar guidelines by Cancer Research UK and the American College of Sports Medicine—says that exercise should be viewed as an adjunct to therapy to help counteract the adverse effects of cancer and its treatment.
