[Comment] The Cancer Moonshot from a European perspective

When President Richard Nixon signed the National Cancer Act in 1971, the USA declared the so-called war against cancer and became a leading nation in accelerating the pace of cancer research discoveries by establishing, for the first time, a large-scale, coordinated national cancer programme. In the following decades, this massive effort resulted in the rapid acquisition of scientific knowledge about all aspects of the hugely complex disease we call cancer. Through this programme, thousands of researchers in the USA and worldwide have contributed to discovering the causes of cancer development and progression and have made possible the new avenues of diagnosis and treatment that are used for the clinical management of patients with cancer today.
