In Reply We thank Zamparini et al for their interest and thoughtful comments surrounding the classification of cancer patient visits in the emergency department (ED) using Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) data. NEDS is the largest all-payer publicly available US hospital-based ED database, and the study objective was to use a nationally representative sample to estimate adult cancer-related ED utilization at the visit level. As noted, data elements related to history of cancer, cancer stage, detailed treatment including immunotherapy, care delivery parameters, and disease status (active, progression, metastatic, recurrence, remission) were not available in the data set.
